Barcelona may have been hitting the headlines since the 1982 Olympics but it cannot match Madrid for pure pleasure and excitement. As a travel destination, its main attraction must be the fact that it is one of the most vibrant and fun cities in Europe. It is simply not possible to be bored in Madrid, whether you are sipping coffee in a pavement café, shopping in its famous stores and flea markets or partying with the Madrileños ‘till the small hours in one of the thousands of bars and nightclubs.
 
 



The city has benefited from massive investment in recent years, not least due to its status as the 1992 European Capital of Culture. The world-renowned Museo de Prado with priceless collections of Spanish art is a must-see, as is Museo Reina Sofia - the home of Picasso’s legendary Guernica.
