OVERVIEW
> |
Affectionately referred to as the 'Daughter of the Baltic', Helsinki sits pretty on a peninsula halfway between Stockholm and St. Petersburg. The city owes its distinctive character and intriguing culture to a combination of Russian and Swedish influences. This unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures is reflected in its magnificent 19th century Russian Orthodox cathedral and clean-cut Scandinavian sculptures that adorn its wide streets and squares. Although Helsinki is a thriving, modern capital, it still manages to retain its small- |

town provincial feel, with tightly knit communities and no high-rise
buildings in sight. The city hibernates during the dark, winter months
but comes alive in the summer when 20-hour days set in and temperatures
often soar to 28°C. This is the best time to see Helsinki in all
its glory, when you can mingle with the locals in the lively pavement
cafés and bars, wander through clean, open spaces and scenic
waterways, visit its excellent museums and art galleries and admire
its stunning neoclassical architecture. |
